Sitzkohle takes the region's oldest export coal and gives it back its most basic, unglamorous use: something to sit on. It's built to the shape of the anonymous bench every Deutsche Bahn platform already has, I didn't want to invent a new form, I wanted to occupy an existing one.
Stellwerk Null

Stellwerk Null is the opposite gesture. Herzberg had a real signal box, a real lever bank, a real system for keeping trains a few seconds apart from disaster. I'm reinterpreting a version of it out of the one material that has no schedule at all. It's not a ruin, and it's not a memorial. It's closer to a fossil of coordination now standing still.
I wanted someone waiting for a delayed regional train to sit down without thinking about any of this, and only notice the form, or the shape of the works, once they'd already been sitting there a while — the same slow, half-attentive way most of us actually notice the places we pass through.
